INTRAVENOUS (IV) ANESTHESIA

Your procedure will be done under INTRAVENOUS (IV) SEDATION. Please note the following pre-operative instructions.

  • Do not eat or drink anything after midnight before your surgery. This includes gum, candy, cough drops, and even small sips of water. Exceptions:

    • If you have diabetes, your surgery should be first in the morning, and you must get special instructions from your primary care doctor. If your appointment is not the earliest one, call (716) 276-3553 to reschedule.

    • If you have been prescribed oral sedation (Halcion), follow the instructions on your prescription and take the pill with just enough water to swallow it.

  • If you use a rescue inhaler for asthma, remember to bring it with you to your surgery.

  • Please arrange for someone you trust to stay with you for the rest of the day and the next day after your surgery.

  • Leave valuables such as jewelry, money, and credit cards at home or with the person accompanying you.

  • Please remove any oral or facial jewelry, piercings, nail polish, makeup, and perfume before your appointment.

  • Wear loose clothing, a t-shirt, and comfortable shoes. Please do not wear rompers or flip-flops. Dress in layers if necessary.

  • Do not wear contact lenses to your surgery appointment.

  • Please avoid making plans to sign any important documents after your surgery.

  • Mobile devices are not allowed in the surgical area. Please leave your phone and any other devices with the person accompanying you.

  • A responsible adult must bring you to your appointment, stay in the reception area during your procedure, and drive you home afterward. You cannot leave alone.

  • Your appointment time may change depending on the day’s needs.

Please make sure your dental plan is up to date and inform us of any changes. Also, please let us know whether you have experienced any respiratory issues or seasonal allergies in the six weeks preceding your surgery, as anesthesia may not be safe in these situations.
