Single Tooth Implants in Erie County NY
Dental Implants in Williamsville NY
According to the American College of Prosthodontists, over 35 million Americans do not have any teeth in their smile, and 120 million are missing at least one tooth. Fortunately, there are many options available to those who are looking to replace their teeth. One such option is single tooth replacements, which can provide a very natural-looking and -feeling result. At Niagara Dental Implant & Oral Surgery, we offer both dental implants and fixed bridges as single tooth replacement options.
What Is a Single Tooth Implant?
A single tooth replacement acts as your missing tooth and integrates/preserves the bone. The body of the implant acts as the root of the tooth, and a crown is placed on top so that the implant resembles your natural teeth. Single tooth replacements help patients to maintain better oral health because these implants keep the other teeth aligned, preventing adjacent teeth from tilting and opposing teeth from supra-erupting.
Why Is a Single Tooth Replacement Important?
A single tooth replacement is the best substitute for a missing tooth. It ensures that the bone is preserved instead of diminishing over time, which decreases function and can cause facial changes. It also prevents other teeth from tilting and supra-erupting, potentially causing the loss of those teeth in the future.
The Single Tooth Replacement Process
The process begins when a doctor has a consultation appointment with you. During this time, he/she will take an X-ray and potentially a scan of your jawbone to see if it is strong enough to withstand an implant. After the initial visit is over and we’ve established that you are a candidate for a single dental implant, the following will occur during the second visit:
The doctor will numb your mouth so that you can either get local anesthesia or, depending on your tolerance, be put under.
Once you are under anesthesia, the doctor will make an incision on the gum and place a bone graft to help the bone heal better around the implant.
Then, the doctor will place the implant. He/she will do so by screwing in a titanium alloy rod into your gums.
You will need to heal after the procedure. It takes about four to six months for the implant to fuse to the bone.
Once the implant has healed, you are ready to get an implant crown placed. This will act as the cap on the tooth, covering up the implant rod and displaying the natural-looking tooth replacement.
